Good morning! Thursday, May 28 is shaping up to be one of those mornings where you need a second cup of coffee just to keep up with the headlines. A blockbuster casino acquisition, a $640,000 Ferrari, and IBM going all-in on quantum computing are all competing for your attention before the opening bell. Here's what's moving this morning.

👀 What to Watch Today

Retail earnings are front and center today, with both Kohl's (KSS) and Best Buy (BBY) already dropping results that are turning heads. KSS posted its strongest comparable sales growth in four years and beat on both revenue and profit, while BBY topped estimates and flagged real momentum in gaming and computing. These two names will be worth watching closely once regular trading kicks off.

On the macro side, keep an eye on how the market digests the US-Mexico trade talks that formally began Thursday. Officials are hashing out updated automotive content rules under the North American trade agreement, and the outcome could ripple through auto sector names. Any headlines out of those negotiations could shift sentiment quickly for car manufacturers and parts suppliers.

Dollar Tree (DLTR) raised its full-year profit outlook, pointing to a consumer base that is actively trading down amid economic pressure. That's worth tracking as a signal for where everyday spending is headed. Meanwhile, Hormel (HRL) beat second-quarter estimates on strong protein demand, adding another data point to the resilient consumer staples story.

🌏 Overnight Recap

Global markets came into Thursday in decent shape. European indexes held steady overnight, helped partly by a softer dollar. The DXY is sitting at 99.29, down 0.24, which tends to give a modest tailwind to multinationals reporting in US dollars. Treasury yields are marginally lower across the board, with the 10-year at 4.48% and the 30-year nudging just below the psychologically watched 5% level.

Bitcoin slipped overnight, dropping 1.29% to around $73,366. Crypto has been running hot, so a modest pullback after a strong stretch is not exactly alarming. Still, it's worth noting that risk appetite in digital assets is slightly muted this morning even as equity futures point higher.

The big overnight story that traders woke up to was Fertitta Entertainment's agreement to acquire Caesars Entertainment (CZR) in a deal valued at roughly $17.6 billion, including the assumption of about $11.9 billion in existing debt. That is a major move in the gaming and hospitality space, and CZR shares are expected to be one of the most active names at the open.

📊 Pre-Market Movers

Kohl's (KSS) is the standout retail mover this morning, surging on news that the department store chain posted its best comparable sales growth in four years. That kind of momentum is rare for a name that has faced persistent headwinds, and the market is responding accordingly in pre-market trading. Best Buy (BBY) is also up after beating expectations, with gaming and computing cited as the key growth drivers.

Caesars Entertainment (CZR) is jumping on the acquisition announcement. Fertitta Entertainment, the company behind the Landry's restaurant empire and Golden Nugget casinos, is taking CZR private in a deal that gives Caesars shareholders a meaningful premium. Expect heavy volume in CZR from the open.

IBM is also one to watch after a double dose of news. The company disclosed a $10 billion investment plan to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029, and separately announced a $5 billion commitment alongside Red Hat for Project Lightwell, an open-source AI security initiative enlisting 20,000 engineers globally. That is a lot of ambition packed into a single morning.

🔍 Today's Watchlist

  1. CZR: Caesars acquisition at $17.6B total value, gaming sector names could see sympathy moves
  2. KSS and BBY: Both beat estimates pre-market, retail sentiment could lift the sector broadly
  3. IBM: Dual catalysts today with a $10B quantum computing pledge and $5B open source AI security push via Project Lightwell
  4. DLTR: Raised full-year profit outlook as budget-conscious consumers trade down, watch for sector read-through
  5. US-Mexico auto trade talks: Any headlines on content rules could move auto stocks and suppliers quickly

Navellier Warns: This Could Leapfrog Elon's SpaceX IPO

Featured image

Elon Musk could take SpaceX public in 2026, at an estimated $1.75 trillion valuation. The IPO would include Elon's AI model, Grok. But according to Louis Navellier, a radical new AI model will launch this year… over 1,000 times more powerful than Elon's. And the company behind it could outperform SpaceX in the process.

🎯 The Morning Playbook

The setup for Thursday is cautiously constructive. Futures are modestly green, yields are a touch lower, and the dollar is soft enough to support risk assets without flashing any warning signs. The retail beats from KSS and BBY suggest the consumer is not fully tapped out, which matters heading into summer.

The Caesars deal is the headline grabber, but the IBM announcements may be the more durable story. A $10 billion quantum computing commitment over five years is not a marketing stunt. It is a strategic bet on where enterprise computing is heading, and it deserves real attention from anyone with exposure to the tech sector.

As for GSK, the hepatitis B functional cure data showing nearly 20% response rates in advanced trials is a significant clinical milestone. Biotech catalysts like this can move fast and far. Keep your watchlist organized and your position sizing thoughtful. Big news days have a way of rewarding the patient and punishing the reactive.
