🔎 The Week That Was
The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,489.72, up 1.03% on the week — a solid headline number that masks a pretty uneven story underneath. The Nasdaq was the real standout, gaining 1.77% to 25,373.85, while the Dow managed a modest 0.53% advance. The Russell 2000, which tracks smaller companies, slipped 0.57% — a reminder that this rally has a very specific zip code. The sector breakdown tells you exactly where investors are putting their conviction right now. Consumer Discretionary led everything with a +4.74% gain, fueled largely by Amazon's massive week (more on that below). Energy added 2.04% — likely getting a lift from the OPEC+ chatter about a September output hike. Meanwhile, the rate-sensitive corners of the market got hit hard: Utilities fell 2.91%, Real Estate dropped 1.51%, and Materials shed 1.87%.
That divergence between growth-oriented sectors and defensive, yield-proxy sectors is worth paying attention to. When Utilities and Real Estate sell off while Consumer Discretionary and Tech run, it typically signals that investors are rotating into risk rather than hiding from it — a broadly constructive posture heading into a heavy earnings week.
When markets reopen Monday, all eyes will be on the earnings calendar, which is absolutely stacked. The week ahead could either confirm this rally has legs or expose it as a narrow trade built on a handful of AI-adjacent names. Position accordingly.

📈 What Drove the Moves
Microsoft and Amazon were the unambiguous stars of the week, and the catalyst was almost certainly earnings. MSFT surged 19.43% to $464.72 — that's a monster move for a company with a multi-trillion-dollar market cap — while AMZN followed close behind with a 17.37% gain to $271.58. Both companies have been leaning heavily into cloud and AI infrastructure, and the market apparently liked what it heard. Google parent Alphabet added 9.05% to $356.13, and Oracle tacked on 8.32% to $129.87, rounding out a week where anything with a credible AI story got rewarded. Snowflake's 7.46% gain to $293.28 fits the same narrative — the data infrastructure play is clearly back in favor. On the other side of the ledger, Roblox had a brutal week, falling 26.48% to $35.60. That's the kind of drop that suggests a serious earnings miss or a guidance cut that spooked investors — the gaming and virtual-world space has been unforgiving when user growth or monetization disappoints. Coinbase shed 12.68% to $146.26, which is notable given that crypto trades 24/7 and Bitcoin sentiment can shift fast; worth watching over the weekend to see if that pressure continues. Micron dropped 8.57% to $823.03 despite the broader chip-adjacent enthusiasm, and Apple's 8.31% decline to $308.91 stands out as the most interesting loser of the week — the stock that everyone owns quietly lagged while its Big Tech peers ran hard. Shopify fell 7.67% to $117.15, though it's reporting earnings this week, so that pullback may reflect pre-report nerves rather than a structural story.

📅 Earnings: Week Ahead
🔭 What to Watch This Week
This is one of the more consequential earnings weeks of the year, and it kicks off Monday when Palantir reports after the close with a consensus estimate of $0.28 per share. PLTR has become a proxy for enterprise AI adoption, and given how well Microsoft and Oracle traded on their AI commentary this past week, the bar is high — but so is investor enthusiasm. Tuesday brings AMD ($1.35 est.), which will need to show that its AI chip ambitions are translating into real revenue, especially with Nvidia setting an impossibly high benchmark for the space. Caterpillar and McDonald's also report Tuesday, offering a ground-level read on industrial demand and consumer spending that no amount of tech optimism can substitute for.Wednesday is the busiest day of the week. Disney ($1.89 est.) will face questions about streaming subscriber trends and theme park demand. Eli Lilly ($6.71 est.) is one to watch closely — the GLP-1 weight-loss drug market is enormous and any update on supply, pricing, or pipeline could move the stock significantly. Uber ($0.83 est.) and DoorDash ($0.50 est.) report the same day, giving investors a simultaneous read on the gig economy and consumer willingness to spend on convenience. Shopify ($0.28 est.) is also on the docket Wednesday — after falling nearly 8% this past week, it either bounces on a solid print or the selling accelerates.
Thursday caps the week with Airbnb ($1.20 est.), which will be an important data point on travel demand heading into the back half of summer. With this many marquee names reporting in a five-day window, the market has plenty of opportunities to either build on last week's gains or give some of them back. The quality of guidance will matter just as much as the headline beats.
