🔎 The Week That Was
This was a week where boring was beautiful. The Dow climbed 0.75% to 51,654.95 and the S&P 500 added 0.48% to 7,811.54, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq slipped 0.40% and the small-cap Russell 2000 took the worst of it, falling 1.41% to 2,806.98.The tell was in the sector tape. Utilities (+3.60%), Consumer Staples (+2.95%), and Energy (+2.57%) led the pack, while Technology (-1.07%) and Communication (-1.10%) brought up the rear. That's a textbook defensive rotation — investors paid up for steady dividends and real assets while trimming the high-flyers that have carried the year.
Energy's strength wasn't random. Tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz hit a wartime high as Iran tries to curb oil exports, and anything that threatens the world's busiest oil chokepoint sends crude — and energy stocks — higher. Real Estate (+2.31%) also benefited as rotation money hunted for yield.
The setup for the week ahead is clear: the market is in a cautious, rotate-into-safety mood heading into bank earnings. Watch whether Monday brings follow-through on the defensive theme or a tech bounce-back after a rough chip week.

📈 What Drove the Moves
The winners board was all software and growth. Zscaler (ZS) jumped 15.82% to $233.73, leading a cybersecurity and cloud rally that also lifted Snowflake (SNOW, +8.82%) and Palantir (PLTR, +10.37%, now $209.05). Roblox (RBLX, +7.87%) and Shopify (SHOP, +6.71%) rounded out a list that proves even in a defensive week, select software names can run on their own momentum. The losers, meanwhile, were a chip-sector bloodbath. Intel (INTC) cratered 9.89% to $104.70, the worst move on the board, while Nvidia (NVDA) fell 4.03% to $229.28 and AMD dropped 3.74%. With headlines flagging two huge Micron and Nvidia trades as a possible outlook signal, traders clearly got nervous about where semiconductor demand heads next.
Crypto-adjacent names felt it too. Coinbase (COIN) slid 4.69% and Rivian (RIVN) lost 4.38% to $13.96, as the risk-off tone squeezed the speculative corners of the market. The split between software green and hardware red was the week's defining divide.

🔭 What to Watch This Week
Bank season kicks off Monday, and it's a loaded slate. JPMorgan (JPM, est. $5.94), Goldman Sachs (GS, est. $12.90), and UnitedHealth (UNH, est. $4.12) all report Tuesday, with Johnson & Johnson (JNJ, est. $2.53) joining the party. These reports set the tone for the entire quarter. For the banks, the questions are familiar but critical: how healthy is the consumer, are loan losses creeping up, and is dealmaking finally picking up? Goldman's trading and investment-banking numbers will be especially telling given the volatility we've seen across tech and energy.
Later in the week, Morgan Stanley (MS, est. $2.83) reports Wednesday and Charles Schwab (SCHW, est. $1.66) follows Thursday. If the big banks deliver, it could give the market the confidence to broaden out — but a cautious outlook on credit or deals could reinforce the defensive tone we saw all week.
